On November 9th 2016 my youngest brother an Army combat veteran of the war in Iraq took his own life and I’m here to tell you my heart is broken. I’m also here to tell you that, I promise you, this is not my first and unfortunately for me probably not my last Broken Heart.
I’ve had more than one woman cheat on me or leave me because I was too poor, too nice, or too much of an asshole.
I’ve had this life kick me around knock me down and leave me for dead. It seems a lot of men have a similar story; someone or something has broken their heart. Maybe you’re reading this right now with a broken heart. Maybe you’re reading this right now and you’ve just lost your dream job. I lost my dream job once and it was, at the time, the worst thing that ever happened to me. I wanted nothing more since the age of 12 than to be a US Army soldier and I got to live that for a short time but my own body gave out on me. Because of a collapsed lung I lost the one thing I dreamed about as a career.
Maybe you’re reading this right now and your heart is broken because you lost someone you love whether it’s a brother you lost to suicide, or a woman you lost to another man. I know the pain of that broken heart as well. Hell I know it better than most and I know it feels like you may never be able to get back up again.
Maybe you’re reading this right now and you realize that your own body is turned against you you’re lying in bed with some horrible disease and they don’t know if there’s a cure for it. And you’re sad you’re broken hearted and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
So the question we have to ask ourselves now is: “What do we do next?”
Well when I was in basic training and we were doing rifle safety and Marksmanship classes someone said “Drill Sergeant what do we do if we get shot” our Drill Sergeant wrinkled his brow and gave a pissed-off look and said “you stand up and f*cking fight Soldier!”
Again the question was asked with a slight twist “Yeah, but Drill Sergeant if I’ve been shot how do I stand up and fight?”
This time with what I can only explain as a look of anger and fury our Drill Sergeant said “look there’s two things you can do in this life when you get shot. One is you can lie down and die or the other is you can stand up and fight!”
It seems like a simple solution and I promise you that it is. You simply make a choice. You make a decision that no matter how much it hurts no matter how many pieces your heart has been broken into, you get up and you fight. You stand up every day and you fight like your life depends on it.
Because I promise you that it does.
