They say a picture is worth a thousand words and when it comes to online dating, that’s an understatement.

The first impression single men have about you comes from your photo, so it’s got to be great. You only have seconds to capture a man’s attention.

Check out these 10 tips to get fabulous photos and look your best online:

1. Stand Up!

If you are worried about looking thin, be sure to stand up. That’s how you always look your best. Once you sit down, your body gets visually cut in half and everything sort of spreads. Shift your weight to one leg by putting one foot in front of the other which accentuates your curves.

2. Great Makeup.

Even if you don’t wear much makeup, you want to look your bet in the photos right?

At the very least apply the basic three: mascara, blush and lipstick. Makeup tends to disappear in pictures depending on the light, so don’t be afraid to add a little more than usual to highlight your beautiful features.

3. Blow Out Your Hair.

If you were going somewhere fancy, how would you wear your hair?

That’s what you want to show in your pictures. Get it blown out or do it yourself. The time you spend to have a good hair day will be totally worth it.

4. Look Hot!

Present yourself as the alluring feminine presence you are! Don’t just throw on any old thing – wear something that makes you FEEL fabulous.

Your confidence shows up in photos so choose date-worthy clothing to show off your assets. If you can look in the mirror and say to yourself, wow you look good– that’s the right outfit. Dare to wear a dress, show off your legs, or make the most of your waistline. Switch clothes between shots and be stunning!

5. Solids, Patterns and Colors.

Simple clothing works best in your photos. Busy patterns or stripes can take away from your lovely shape or even add pounds. Stick to solids if possible. For colors, choose what enhances your skin tone. Even though many women choose black to look thinner, you can also try brown, navy, royal blue, dark red or purple. Also, research shows men pay attention to women in red or pink. I’m just saying…

6. Smile for the Camera.

Yes! Many women just don’t smile. Yet, when you look happy, you are so much more appealing. Show off those pearly whites to capture his attention and communicate that you know how to enjoy life.

7. Get in the Mood.

When a model stands before the camera, the photographer tells her what to think about so her mood shows up on film. Same thing goes for your photos. Get lost in happy thoughts.

Imagine yourself in love with the right man. Remember a time in your life when things were going your way. Let your delightful personality shine! Sometimes it helps to take a friend along who can help you relax and make you laugh.

8. Background Matters.

Notice what is behind you before you snap the photo. An outdoor shot can be an ideal setting. Indoors, keep the background as simple as possible so it doesn’t diffuse the focus from you. Avoid open closet doors or cabinets, staircase railings or busy wall decorations.

9. Post 3-5 Photos.

You need a minimum of three photos including a head shot, full body shot and one more, all in different outfits and poses. Beyond the basics, try pictures of you participating in an activity like tennis, skiing or standing in front of your garden or favorite restaurant.

Choose something that adds interest. One word of caution; don’t post more than seven or eight photos of yourself because you might give the impression of being a bit self-absorbed or vain.

10. It’s All About You Babe.

While you may be tempted to post pictures of yourself with others, don’t do it. Standing with other women can confuse a man about which one you are (my male clients complain about group shots women post). He doesn’t need to see photos of your children or pets because he won’t be dating them, just you.

Whatever you do, don’t post photos with other men, even if it’s your dad. The men viewing your profile don’t know who he is. Keep his eyes on you.

My last recommendation is to consider working with a professional. Photographers know about lighting and positioning so you can look your very best. To capture the male attention you deserve, why not use everything you can to your advantage?

If you don’t have the budget, then get a friend or family member to take between 30-50 photos. Don’t stop to review, just keep clicking and evaluate later to keep from becoming self-critical. Have fun online!
