I think my boyfriend is mad at me because I gave him an innocent suggestion on how he should study English. We were talking about his frustrations about learning and it seems like he’s totally unsatisfied on the pacing of his learning in the present. I told him that I believe it depends on the individual, that each person has his/her own learning style. He said that sometimes it’s okay to receive suggestions from other people, and I took that as a go signal to give my own innocent suggestion about his learning. He suddenly got defensive and irritated, and he told me that I should leave him alone when it comes to studying English. I was shocked because his reaction just came out of nowhere. And then I asked him why he got offended with my suggestion and then he said that he doesn’t want me telling him what to do. I swallowed up my pride and just apologized, I told him that I meant no harm when I gave him my suggestion. But I can tell that he’s still irritated or angry or whatnot.

This happened to us before too and I’m starting to get disappointed because it also feels like he’s trying to compete with my personal success. It sometimes feels as if I need to be “weaker” and “less successful” for him to feel good and be happy. What’s giving me more disappointment is the fact that I’m actually expecting him to be more matured than this (he’s 44 and I’m 26).

I don’t know how to handle the situation anymore. I love him and I know he feels the same way about me too. I would appreciate it much if you could give me an advice. Thanks a lot.

It sounds like your boyfriend lacks confidence and was perhaps put down and treated poorly from his perspective in the past–these verbal attacks toward you when you are just trying to be supportive are inappropriate and destructive–sounds like that is about him and not you, but he is making it about you. This kind of thing needs to be resolved through counseling, talking it out, or something. If it is not resolved, your relationship is likely headed for real trouble….I wish someone had told me this a lot sooner in my life. God bless and hope your situation gets resolved in as positive a way as possible.

If a man is engaged and open about it and a woman hooks up w/ him is it a bad idea to become more down the line. If down the line he either never got married or did marry then divorced? Basically both full circle and single again. Engaged is not married yet but is it setting up for failure, like getting w/ a married man and thinking he wouldn’t do the same to you?
5 yrs difference in age him older. Then 22/ 27 later 30/ 35.

I am involved with a guy who is also Newly Single, I’m American, he’s from New Zeland. His wife and children live in New Zeland – both he and I are nearly divorced, we should be free with-in the next month. We sleep together, it gets better every time (it’s been about 2 months), but he says I’m 12 months ahead of his time, then he throws out lines like – don’t worry, nothing matters, we’re going to end up together anyway. He has NEVER taken me on a proper date, but we have many mutual friends, we have a ton of fun together, except that he smokes, I don’t. I think this sounds weird…we have a commitment to be exclusive…I do trust him, but I’m not sure I trust him for more than him not being with anyone else physically. We do not talk everyday, and he’s very busy with his business. Hes getting divorced because his wife says he was emotionally unavailable…that’s why I left my husband, and my husband suffered from depression and was totally boring…please read between the lines I’m blathering on in confusion….I dumped my married boyfriend because of the article you wrote about that.

Sorry, me as a woman, I never remember dates or birthday from boyfriends either, not even from my own younger sister, because she comes later, only from older sister, because she is older, I remember that better. I even fall asleep at a date with a guy when we attend a concert with alot of noise because I had a bad flu.

It does not mean you do not care. I am just forgetful , sick of the flu, in bad fysical shape, have alot stress to distract me or just too much for me, that I even forget myself.

Yes, being nervous and shy is soo common. I have these kind of feelings as well. But more aspects of your life will suffer because of this trait. I am working hard on expanding my confidence, because confidence comes after you work hard on something or having achieved something worthwile in your life.
